Learn to Read. Read to Learn.

When he wrote The Cat in the Hat in 1957, Dr. Seuss proved once and for all that learning to read didn't have to be dull. Over the past forty years, we at Random House Children's Publishing have expanded on that idea, using the wonderfully wacky writings and drawings of Dr. Seuss to produce books that not only help children learn to read but also teach them about the world around them. We have continually followed the good doctor's example of balancing education and entertainment in everything we've produced.

In that spirit, we have created Seussville University, where children can have "lots of good fun that is funny" while learning basic reading, math, science, and reasoning skills. Kids' favorite Seuss characters will serve as their guides in this brand-new interactive learning environment.

Horton the Elephant hosts the reading area, where children will learn concepts such as letter recognition, the sounds of letters, and rhyming words.
Yertle the Turtle hosts the math area, where children will learn to recognize numerals and number words, to count, and to do simple addition.
The Lorax hosts the science area, where children will be introduced to animal categories, basic astronomy, and ecology.
Sam-I-Am hosts the reasoning area, where children will compare size, number, patterns, and directions and learn about opposites.

All of the activities in Seussville University have been adapted from extensions of our Dr. Seuss book lines: Beginner Fun Books ™ and The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library ™. Since children develop at different paces, these activities can be appropriate for a range of ages. We recommend them for children ages 3-7.

We encourage you to work on these activities with your child, both at the computer with our on-screen activities and off-line with our printable activities. In order to play the on-screen activities, you will need Shockwave. Click here to download Shockwave for free. In order to view the printable activities, you will need Adobe Acrobat 3.0 Reader software. Click here to download Acrobat Reader for free. All materials that appear on the Seussville University web site may be printed out and photocopied for use at home or in the classroom.

Thank you for visiting Seussville University. We hope that it will become one of your family's favorite destinations on the Web, providing all the necessary tools for your children to learn to read and read to learn.
